@JnoPrds
The story was as cliche I’m 12 and this is deep as it gets. The director took this and turned it into a space setting. Extremely boring and poorly executed. Self absorbed nonsense. The director probably thought this was Oscar bait. But in fact it was dog shit.

I believe the space and worlds destruction was the plot.... But the real underlying and poignant message was the relationship of the son, brad Pitts character and the father, Tommy lee jones.
How the son got through life by working hard pushing hurt, anger abandonment feelings to one side. Finally through a leading up to a world disaster he has a chance to confront and deal with all this by finally finding his father.
By meeting, talking and seeing what the father has done and become. The son was still able to reach down and forgive the father and telling him that he loved him. Then through the final powerful scene the father tussled with the son and telling him to let go, "let me go Roy"....The son with sadness did !....this set him free brought inner healing, love and reconciliation with life and wife.

Conventional, Hallmark Channel, Therapy Session Ending. Yet another sci-fi Captain Ahab (Forbidden Planet, The Black Hole, 2001, Sunshine, Pandorum).. To the Stars? What stars? More like AD ASSH0LE. I wanted him to get out to Neptune and the father's like "I detected signals of intelligent life in the Oort Cloud and I've pinpointed their position. I had to kill these b1tches because they weren't up for a one-way trip and sabotaged the ship. But with your ship Roy we can make it out there!" And Pitt's like "F@#k yeah dad, I knew you were right all along! Even though you never played ball with me as a kid, I recognize that Western greatness is unwise, mad, and inhuman. And don't sweat it, I killed a half-dozen astronauts and two baboons on the way over."

Cue some dramatic music as the McBrides load up a shuttle, blow the Lima station and head to Cepheus while the father disillusions him - "You know Roy, it hurts me to say this but your mother was a wh0re. I had to secretly check you and sister's DNA and thank God you're mine, but there were 3 other contenders for those spots. It's part of why this questing became easier for me." Roy's like "I understand dad." Papa McBride says "You know why I loaded those dead bodies up with us, right, Roy?" Roy replies "For a burial in space? No wait! Because alien technology might be able to resurrect them?" Père McBride laughs over the Neptunian ring material hitting the shuttle with THUMP THHUMP THUMP THHHHUMP "No son, in case we have to eat them! It's an 11 month journey to the source of that signal. I processed two of them into jerky right before you got here. You know about the Donner Party, right Roy? They were settlers in covered wagon days." Roy nods in agreement, his survival instincts hard as a coffin nail as he realizes in an epiphany, he is his father's son. In a voiceover he recites Tennyson's immortal lines: TO STRIVE, TO SEEK, TO FIND, AND NOT TO YIELD.

They prep the Cepheus and as the countdown begins, Tommy Lee Jones sends one last message back to SpaceCom: "Listen up you pus$ies: You never send a McBride to kill a McBride. The Lima's antimatter pulses were from damage your bullsh1t affirmative action first-women-to-Neptune crew caused when they mutinied against my command. Columbus had to put down a mutiny. I have watched SpaceCom for 35 years be transformed into a bullsh1t woke bureaucracy where the weak are selected over the strong like my son simply because of their skin tone or vagina. It's why you c0cksuckers have pirates on the Moon. I will not suffer the deeds of evil-disposed persons, with little worth, who, without respect for him to whom they owe their obedience, presume to set up their own wills. Now then, my son and I have blown the Lima and are heading out to the Oort Cloud on a what could be a suicide trip to investigate an intelligent radio transmission emanating from 500 AUs out, like a bit of cheese placed the furthest distance in a maze a mouse can just barely navigate. If we survive this journey it will owe to our rugged independence and never-surrender attitude, not bureaucratic handwringing and the collectivist mindset of an ant colony. My son tells me your Mars facility director Lantos' mother and father were among my crew. Relay this message to her: I remember them well, they were delicious. And remember SpaceCom, you don't kill a McBride, we kill you. Over and out."

The Roys are pushed back into their seats as the electric propulsion initiates its burn sequence. They fly past Pluto, agreeing that it is a planet since it's spherical and you can walk on it. Father and son hook up to the umbilical feeding system and enter into comas. FADE OUT.

FADE IN: The Cepheus has reached its destination nearly a year later, the Roys come out of their comas and detach themselves. Just outside the windows is an astonishing light show of geometric shapes pulsing with unspeakable energy. Tommy Lee Jones says "My God..." They grow larger, and larger....

SMASH CUT to Elf Princess, Roy's girlfriend, living her sad life that was sad before Roy disappeared and after Roy disappeared. Even tho she's a depressive whom one can't rely on to understand man's need to do great sh1t, as she enters her kitchen and flings her keys down - there is Roy standing before her. He explains a highly advanced race took him and his father across time and the universe and out of love for her he has come back to show her what he has seen, which includes cloud cities on far flung worlds, beings who have evolved into a state of deathless pure energy and surf solar flares for fun, and even a race of intelligent fungi who humans unknowingly commune with from Earth through the use of DMT. "But what about mom?" Roy explains he and his father are now masters of time, not just space, and she can see all these things over years and come back to Earth and it will be tomorrow. She thinks about her gray cubicle at work and the Starbucks on the corner that has gotten ever more expensive and nods profusely through her tears, YES YES I WILL GO WITH YOU! FADE IN her dad and Aerosmith singing I DON'T WANNA CLOSE MY EYES, I DON'T WANNA FALL ASLEEP 'CAUSE I'D MISS YOU BABE, AND I DON'T WANNA MISS A THING and Roy and Elf Princess are flying over an alien world with massive rings visible in the daytime sky above, riding a feathered creature of immense size heading to a gleaming crystalline city floating in the clouds.

ROLL CREDITS...

I don't want to miss one smile
And I don't want to miss one kiss
And I just want to be with you
Right here with you, just like this
And I just want to hold you close
I feel your heart so close to mine
And just stay here in this moment
For all the rest of time
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Don't want to close my eyes
Don't want to fall asleep
'Cause I'd miss you baby
And I don't want to miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you (even when I dream)
The sweetest dream will never do
I'd still miss you baby
And I don't want to miss a thing
I don't want to close my eyes
I don't want to fall asleep
'Cause I'd miss you baby
And I don't want to miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
I'd still miss you baby
And I don't want to miss a thing
Don't want to close my eyes
I don't want to fall asleep, yeah
And I don't want to miss a thing

There... I fixed it.

I think, all the movie could be a dream wich Roy has.
In that way he have undertood the importance of appreciate his family, his father lifejob, relationship, and the values wich makes humans live a life. That is the reason why so many things happend in a sort unreal way and adding to that, the final psicology test escene is quite similar to the initial one👏👏
To me was a great movie.

@careydyer--musicandmore
I think one of the key moments in the movie was when Pitt's character made the decision to return to his ship and try to get home. I wonder if in that moment he realized that if he gave up and floated away, he'd have become what his father became. The best way to "honor" his father's work, in a sense, was to go back home and connect with the wife that he'd distanced himself from -- since, as his father had discovered, "we're all we've got."
Комментарий от : @careydyer--musicandmore

@robertmastro8611
everyone has missed the WHOLE point. It lies in one word that we miss because we think it is a directive, a simple instruction to the recording computer at movie's end, but no. Pitt, after finishing his final statement and hesitating, is not just telling the recording computer to submit his statement report, he is telling the audience, humanity, every individual that the answer to all of this great mystery is simple and pure: Submit. Just SUBMIT.

@siztem
A movie is meant to entertain, and with that in mind I give movies a lot of rope for creative license.
But Ad Astra pisses me off so much. "Lets make an interplanetary space movie with the laziest ideas possible"
Search for extra-terrestrials? Awesome! I'm super down.
But lets not just deploy telescopes and detectors in orbit. No, lets put them on the largest sky-scrapers imaginable. With planes flying around them and shit. Because 9/11 never happened, right?
And a signal from outside the solar system couldn't possibly reach earth, so lets go to Neptune.
Oh wait, we can see almost all the light in the entire universe from earth, because light can travel for billions of years. That's weird.
Onoes, we lost contact with the crew. From earth. So, lets go to mars, because we might get better reception. And, you know, because somehow light stopped working.
Oh shoot, there's a dang war being waged on the moon. It would be wild if those same rockets that got people there were used to, you know, settle that conflict. But nah, moon rockets that get you to mars only travel like 2 miles.
Also, SpaceCom, who they sent a whole crew to the farthest planet with an anti-matter reactor, really needs to kill this guy, but can't do it with a RADAR-guided missile (which by today's standards is literally century-old technology). Hey, wasnt that spinny thing on top of the Neptune station a radar done? That's weird
But nope, gotta send a whole other crew, increasing travel time and cost by magnitudes.
"yeah but all that breaks the plot of the movie"
Well then it's an absolute trash plot.
Literally hate this movie

I always thought it was more of a metaphor for a man not wanting to be a father. And for a son who longed for that closure, to the point that he himself had trouble retaining relationships.

The movie was visually impressive but thats about it. The story is convoluted and moves at the snails pace. By the time anything interesting in space happens you have been bored to death for 40 minutes. Whoever edited the movie could have cut an hour out of it and its the same movie.

The narrator to this video missed out on something. So let me explain...yes Clifford did not want to go back to Earth 🌎 and face the government because of what he had done to the other astronauts...BUT THE REAL REASON why he wanted to be let go...IS because he never gave up and he never will...he will some how find INTELLIGENT LIFE out there‼️...Even if he's not alive to see it... AND I KNOW THAT SOUNDS PRETTY SCARY AND CRAZY TO THINK LIKE THAT...BUT that's what he was thinking...That somehow some way he'll be discovered out there by a different life form...which then he accomplished his mission...even tho he isn't alive to see it happen...AND THAT'S WHAT YOU CALL THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE‼️

This film didnt do enough to differentiate between the concept of "no alien life within out meager and pathetic ability to detect" vs "no alien life period".

Its like bitch weve existed for a nanosecond in evolutionary terms and our ability to detect life within this galaxy is so inadequate its not even funny.

I dunno its just the "theres nothing out there" vibe pissed me off rather than "theres nothing close enough to us that our species will live long enough to make contact". Thats a huge difference. This films tech was in no way advanced enough to rule out chance of life in our galaxy.

@daskedaske2320
So it was fine with everyone back home that he high-jacked a ship and indirectly killed the crew as long as he learned the lesson that 'we are all we have, so let's make the most of it'? I suppose technically he saved the planet, but the original crew were going to do that anyway. The families of the dead pilots must have been happy that he got the chance to say goodbye to his dad. The irony of ending up in jail after months in space isolation would not have made a good ending I suppose.

Комментарий от : @ryanatorryanson9535

@ryanatorryanson9535
This movie was awful, and left me with the same eternal question humans have had forever, which is “what’s the point of it all”?
What the hell was the point of this 2.5 hour slog of a movie? That you don’t HAVE to turn into your toxic parent? That you shouldn’t become a workaholic? That you should spend time with loved ones?
Outside of those things “which we already know”, the movie was pointless.
His father was THAT obsessed with finding alien life that he killed his crew, and stayed in deep space alone for like 25 years, then just lets his son blow up the ship with zero resistance?
Why exactly did he kill himself? Shame? Fear of punishment? Considered space to be “home”?
How did Roy’s ship survive an unstoppable shock wave from a nuclear explosion in space, considering we hear that pulses get more intense as they travel through space?
This movie was just pointless, and Brad Pitt should personally hand out refunds.

Then fly's untethered to his Dad's spaceship, and again just "let's himself in " and there's his Dad, who he doesn't know or like, "I love you Dad " ? plus Dad is just up there for 20 years by himself, with plenty of food and toilet paper?
